True USA Manufacturing and its Impact on the Economy

Did you know:

1 – Manufacturers contributed $2.25 trillion to the United States economy in 2016.

Since Q2 of 2009, when manufacturers generated $1.7 trillion, this number has been on an upward trend. Value-added output from durable goods also grew over that same time period from $0.87 trillion to $1.20 trillion and non-durable goods output from $0.85 trillion to $1.00 trillion. In 2016, manufacturing was responsible for 11.7% of GDP in the U.S. economy. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis)

2 – $1.00 spent in manufacturing equates to $1.89 added to the economy.

That’s the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector. Further, for each worker in manufacturing, there are an additional four hired in another industry. (Source: NAM calculations using IMPLAN)

3 – More than 3/4 of all private sector R&D is conducted by manufacturers in the USA, driving more innovation than any other sector.

Research and development in manufacturing has gone from $126.2 billion in 2000 to $229.9 billion in 2014. Pharmaceuticals, chemicals, computers, electronics and motor vehicles and parts were the most significant contributors to R&D spending in that year.  (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis)

4 – If manufacturing in the United States was its own country it would be the ninth-largest economy in the world.

Manufacturing had $2.1 trillion in value added in 2014. Including the United States, only eight other nations could best that in terms of GDP. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis, International Monetary Fund)

5 – Most manufacturers in the U.S. are considered to be quite small.

In 2015, there were 251,774 manufacturers and all but 3,813 had less than 500 employees. Three-quarters had fewer than 20 people working for them. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics of U.S. Businesses)

6 – With nearly 12.5 million workers in the United States, manufacturing takes up 8.5% of the workforce.

After the Great Recession came to an end, manufacturing companies have hired more than one million workers. 7.8 million people work in durable goods and 4.7 million work in non-durable goods manufacturing. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics)

7 – Virtually 50% of all manufactured goods exports went to nations that the United States has FTAs with.

The U.S. exported $634.6 billion in manufactured goods to fair trade agreement countries in 2015. 48.2% to be exact. (Source: U.S. Commerce Department)

8 – Tremendous growth over the past couple decades has made manufacturers more “lean” than ever and more competitive globally.

Output per hour has increased by more than 2.5 times since 1987 for all manufacturing workers. Productivity is about 1.7 times great for all non-farm businesses. As a matter of fact, durable goods have seen even larger growth, almost tripling its labor productivity in that same span of time. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

9 – It’s predicted that 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will be needed in the next decade and 2 million of those openings are expected to go unfilled due to lack of skills.

(Source: Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute)

10 – U.S. manufactured goods exports have quadrupled over the past 25 years.

Back in 1990, $329.5 billion in goods were exported. A decade later that figure more than doubled to $708 billion. Despite slowing global growth exports reached an all-time high in 2014 of $1.403 trillion. (Source: U.S. Commerce Department)

The Origination of Gift Giving and Why it’s Still Important Today

Humans giving one another gifts is one of the oldest if not, the oldest, running traditions that has been passed from culture to culture and down generation to generation for thousands of years. In fact, it goes back as far as man can remember. By nature people are social creatures that enjoy being in each other’s company and convey our feelings through the giving of gifts. When you give someone a gift it can be an expression of love, acknowledging a job well done or a simple thank you that shows gratitude for a friend. To better understand the origination of gift giving and why it’s still important today, we must travel back in time where this unique form of expression began.

“The best things to do with the best things in life is to Give them away.” – Ambrose Bierce

2018 Gift Collection – Control Freak

Where did it begin?

Nobody is certain, but it is suspected that gift giving originated in primitive cavemen culture. Leaders of tribes or clans would recognize upstanding individuals who took part in the success of a great achievement by entrusting them with a gift. Back then this was seen as a status symbol. Natural yet unique objects were given such as rare stones, teeth from a triumphant kill or special wood and bark from a tree. Tools soon came into the picture and allowed for more elaborate gifts to be crafted like necklaces and other wearables.

In the Egyptian era, pharaohs received a majority of the gifts and built immense pyramids to store their riches for the afterlife.

Good luck tokens were used by the Roman’s to show allegiance and presents to carry favors. This later influenced all of Western civilization and “tokens” are still used today.

During the Medieval age gifts were given to the king to gain favors or to show dedication in times of war. Upon formal engagement to be married personal gifts would be given as dowries in the form of coins, precious metals and even herds of cows or sheep.

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we Give.” – Winston Churchill

2018 Gift Collection – Limelight

Why is it still important?

There’s an old saying that goes like this: “it is far better to give than to receive.” Every day gifts are given to partners, family members, co-workers and friends. Gift giving is the universal way to celebrate holidays, milestones, anniversaries, birthdays and more. Why is it so rewarding for both the giver and receiver? Simple. It allows people to connect. It gives us a sense of satisfaction to share in that with someone special.

Substantial amounts of research has been conducted over the years into the feelings of well being that occur when we give gifts. According to Northwestern Medicine  and science, “the act of giving is physically, mentally and emotionally beneficial.” Here’s a few reasons (not that you need one) to give a gift to someone you care about today:

  • Makes you feel happy
  • Gain a sense of purpose and improve your state of mind
  • Create a social connection
  • When you give it makes other want to do the same

You’re invited to explore our complete 2018 Gift Collection which includes over 30 new products and gift ideas for all occasions and any budget. Happy giving!

How to Host an Event That People Will Remember

Hosting an event that people will remember can be challenging and (if we’re all being honest) super overwhelming. You’re probably thinking:

“How will I promote it?”

“Will anyone actually come?”

“Chicken, fish or vegetarian?”

“What if my budget isn’t big enough?”

Press pause. Before you answer any of the above questions, let’s go back to the beginning and start with step one.

Here are 4 event planning tips:

1. Audience

Knowing your audience is key to throwing an event that people will remember. In order to create interest for both attendees and sponsors you’ll need to spend time on developing killer content that creates a buzz around your event. Before you begin producing said content and event assets you will want to figure out exactly who it is you are trying to invite.

After the content is built and you have determined your audience, it’s time to spread the word. Technically, there is no right or wrong way to go about enticing people into coming to your event. Start by finding them first.

Promoting your event could look like:

  • Strategically placed posters throughout the community
  • Utilizing major influencers to share the message
  • Targeted online ads
  • Social media posts / Facebook event
  • Press release
  • Having sponsors leverage their audience
  • Industry Associations

Lastly, remember to compile relevant data on attendees during the registration process. Having that information will not only help you grow and understand your audience, but better connect with them in future promotions.

2. Location

Location, location, location. Did we mention location?

On a more serious note, location will make or break your event. It’s really important and sets the tone from arrival to departure.

Some things to consider before making a decision:

  1. Theme
  2. Atmosphere you want to create
  3. Amenities that will be required (rooms for breakout sessions, power, restrooms, food etc.) – List all of these out
  4. Room and board – Most hotels will negotiate for large groups
  5. Space for sponsor booths or tables

3. Speakers

It’s easy to forget that speakers get as much from your event as you are getting from them. Whether it’s exposure for their brand as an individual, meeting attendees or networking with your other VIPs, you have a lot to offer. Having a solid concept in mind before approaching industry experts to speak makes it easier for them to envision their role in your event.  Choose a topic your audience will connect with and be inspired by.

4. Get Creative with a Badge

Some might say it’s all in the details. At SnugZ we say it’s all in the badge.

Oftentimes badges are neglected and event planners settle for a much less appealing sticker name tag with “Parker” scribbled on it.

Do you want your event to be remember as unorganized and cheap? No.

A badge is much more than a name tag. Use that space in a creative way to get your audience engaged!

  • Map out your venue
  • List the conference schedule
  • Run a hashtag or social media contest
  • Go AR like Facebook at F8
  • Tell a story about each attendee
  • Your idea here __________
This is Parker. Don’t be Parker.
Facebook’s F8 AR Badge

Ordering a lanyard without its badge is unnatural. So buy the badge and start planning an event people will remember! Free setup on full-color badges through May of 2018!* Check out Lanyard + Badge options here.

Attributes to Look for in High Quality Sunscreen

Ben Altenes

Meet Ben Altenes. Veteran, photographer and ultra runner.

He’s the kind of guy who refers to a 20 mile trail run as “afternoon fun”. Ben is also a US Army Veteran and began running as a positive way of dealing with PTSD. Being active and outdoors can be extremely therapeutic. That’s why SnugZ is donating a portion of all sunscreen sales from April through July 2018 to Continue Mission – a non-profit organization committed to serving Veterans with service connected physical, mental and emotional injuries.

After Ben’s military service the camera became his outlet, that tool to bring along with him just like he brought along a weapon during combat. Out on deployment, everything around him had to be a tool he could use and trust. Protective gear and equipment he needed being out there alone. Same concept applies to trail running. Ben still needs the proper gear to protect him in the backcountry like shoes, high quality sunscreen and a camera to tell the story. Ben’s Continuing his Mission by creating a story and a journal through his photography. NOT WITHOUT COMMITMENT. NOT WITHOUT COURAGE. NOT WITHOUT SUNSCREEN.

Not all sunscreen is created equal.

Therefore, it can be overwhelming to know which products you can trust and those you should avoid. Don’t worry! We’ve done the research for you. Keep reading for the attributes you should look for in high quality sunscreen.

SPF

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a measure of sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Well, now you might be thinking to yourself, “What’s the difference between SPF 15 and SPF 50 sunscreen?”. Let’s break it down into the percent each SPF filters out:

SPF 15 – 93% of all incoming UVB rays

SPF 30 – 97% of all incoming UVB rays

SPF 50 – 98% of all incoming UVB rays

Difference in protection is minimal, but if you have sensitive skin, or your family has a history of skin cancer, an extra 5% can make a large impact. No matter if you are using SPF 30 or 50, no sunscreen can black all UV rays.

Broad Spectrum

Broad spectrum is a term that is often synonymous with sunscreen, but what does it actually mean?

Two types of UV light can damage your skin – UVA and UVB. Broad spectrum sunscreen products protect you from both. The first can prematurely age your skin while the latter can cause your skin to burn (something we are all too familiar with). Personal care products being sold and labeled as broad spectrum sunscreen must be tested and meet the updated FDA standards on a regular basis. Make sure your sunscreen of choice is up to par.

Oxybenzone-Free

Oxybenzone aka benzophenone-3, BP-3, and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone. Wow that’s a mouthful. So, why is it bad?

Environmental Working Group says the chemical oxybenzone is being added to nearly 65% of non-mineral sunscreens as documented in their 2017 sunscreen database. Oxybenzone is a chemical found in some flowering plants. However, it is now being commercially produced from benzoyl chloride with 3-hydroxyanisole. Research suggests that chemical sunscreens are absorbed through the skin and make their way into the bloodstream. EWG, among other toxicology experts, believe it is linked to hormone disruption and potentially to cell damage that may lead to skin cancer. Double check the label to ensure your sunscreen doesn’t have this toxic ingredient. Learn more at ewg.org

Hawaii’s state legislature recently passed a bill that bans chemical sunscreens that not only cause harm to your body, but reportedly contribute to coral reef bleaching. Senate Bill 2571 prohibits the sale and distribution of any sunscreen that contains oxybenzone or octinoxate. According to the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology “chemicals in sunscreen kill coral and result in DNA damage in larval and adult stage coral. The impact on DNA limits coral’s ability to grow and develop healthily.”

Branded sunscreen sales will be impacted by this new regulation. How much? That is yet to be determined. Set your mind at ease knowing that SnugZ USA’s SPF 30 lip balm, SPF 30 sunscreen, SPF 50 sunscreen spray and zinc is coral reef safe. Unfortunately our other sun care products are not yet up to the new regulation.

Reapply How Often?

– After 40 minutes of swimming or sweating

– Immediately after towel drying

– At least every 2 hours

Character Traits: Variations in Natural Leather

NO TWO HIDES ARE ALIKE

With every order, the Traverse craftsman starts with the raw ingredients – a piece of leather and a brand logo.

But instead of working with detailed blueprints, the master crafts his work one stitch and cut at a time. Just enough

structure to provide a template while still leaving room for improvisation and creativity. The result is not only

the longest lasting promotion you’ve ever seen, but one which elicits a visceral response above and beyond mere function.

Traverse has emerged as more than a great promotional product – it’s an emotional charge to the senses.

CHARACTER TRAITS

Variations that are found in natural leather make for a truly unique promotional product. Traverse leather goods elicit a

response each time they are shared and used. It’s a piece that will be kept and integrated into your life for years to come.

Learn more about each leather characteristic below.

WRINKLES

When an extra thick piece of leather is bent back on itself naturally, it adds character that creates dimension. It’s true what they say, a wrinkle merely indicates where a smile has been.

SCARS

These are heralded events in the lives of our cows and bulls – a tussle with the tough mesquite bushes, a battle, a run through the barbed wire fence. Typically these will surface as long thin black lines. The appropriate response is a nod of respect for a fight well fought.

STRETCH MARKS

These serve as an indication of life. Stretch marks occur with extremely fast growth or living large and in charge. Either way it means this animal was at the top of the metaphorical food chain. Share the glory and the gluttony.

CALLOUSES

And you thought the raised teats on a Longhorn were just for good looks? Callouses provide a great guard that limits scrapes and cuts as the cow walks through fields of prickly cacti. Callouses are the result of these life patterns, rubbing that itchy spot with your horn or sleeping on your side. See? Habits do make a difference. They will appear as small, circular, smooth markings.

INSECT BITES

These are visible signs that we’re not the only ones who battle tiny jaws, stingers and suckers. They may appear as tiny black or off-colored spots. Stand in stoic appreciation of the creature who was unable to slap a mosquito with its hoof.

VEINS

One of the key marking of a well marbled leather hide are veins. Note to be confused with a blood pumping body builder caught in a Vesuvius moment. Hmmm…Vesuvius Veins. It sounds like an iconic rock band or a really nice piece of leather.

Healthy Practices to Keep You Cold & Flu Free

History of the Flu

Have you heard about the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918? According to History.com, it was the deadliest in history, infecting an estimated 500 million people worldwide. At the time, that accumulated for about one-third of the planet’s population. It killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims, including 675,000 Americans. The never-before-seen 1918 flu strain was detected first in Europe, United Starts and parts of Asia before making its way around the world. Transport yourself to that time period and try to imagine having no effective drugs, vaccines or treatments for today’s flu let alone, back then.

What is the flu and how do you get it?

WebMD defines it as: Influenza, commonly known as the “flu”, is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses (Bad Nasties). The virus is spread through the air when a person coughs, sneezes, talks etc. You can also become infected by touching something with the virus already on it and then making contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. “Flu season” tends to run from late fall into early spring here in the United States.

Man infected with the influenza or flu virus

So if you’re asking yourself (trust us, you aren’t alone), “How do I protect myself and loved ones from germs and Bad Nasties?”, then here’s some healthy practices to keep you cold and flu free this year:

1. Hygiene

  • Wash your hands often using warm water and anti-bacterial soap for 15-20 seconds.
  • Avoid favorite destinations of germs and Bad Nasties like public restrooms, restaurants, airplanes, and hotels just to name a few.
  • Make it a habit to put on hand sanitizer. When used properly it can eliminate up to 99.9% of germs on skin – Get EQP minus 15% on these best selling sanitizers! Hurry offer ends 2/28/2018

2. Diet

  • Eat fresh vegetables, meats and other unprocessed foods.
  • Cut out sugar. Did you know sugar can stifle your immune system for several hours after you eat it?
  • Support a healthy immune system by taking nutrition supplements.
  • Drink a proper amount of water.

3. Change Your Lifestyle

  • Exercise: choose a physical activity that’s fun and works for you.
  • Eliminate stress through meditation or yoga (this promotes good health).
  • Rest up. Never take for granted a good night’s sleep, 6-8 hours depending on you.
  • Go outside to enjoy fresh air and sunshine.

5 Ideas to Make Your Corporate Wellness Program Thrive

no. 2 Corporate Wellness

Did you know 80% of employees at companies with booming wellness programs feel more bought in and cared for by employers?

Health and wellness programs have become popular in many companies to bring in and keep top talent, create a fun and productive work environment, and promote overall well being. A successful wellness program strikes a balance between educating employees on self-care while still having fun. If your team isn’t engaged or having fun, they’ll lose interest very quickly. So, make it fun!

Below are 5 ideas (many we’ve used here at SnugZ and experienced the benefit first hand) that you can easily work into your wellness program to make it thrive!

1. Offer Creative Workspaces

Like John Cleese once said, “If you want creative workers give them time to play.” Nobody wants to feel like they are working in a prison cell a.k.a. a cubicle with nothing to stare at but 3 blank walls. Put a ping pong table in the break room, offer colorful and comfy chairs, and surprise them with a desk toy like our RATTLER wood snake cube puzzle.

RATTLER Wood Snake Cube Puzzle (TRATTLER)

2. Remind People to Get Flu Shots

Flu season is back and is already the most widespread on record. Now is a good time to send out a list of locations offering flu shots (especially those covered by the company’s health insurance). To make it easy, you can also arrange for a company to give flu shots on-site. Give each employee a branded hand sanitizer to promote general health around the office.

EQP minus 15% on our best selling SANITIZER through 2/28/2018!

3. Host a Monthly Healthy Potluck

Everyone loves to eat right? Well, even if they don’t, they should! This one’s easy and tasty. First, decide on a day and then put together a sign up sheet with 2 columns (name and what you’re bringing). Announce that it’s been posted in the break room or send it out to individual teams so people can join in.

4. Practice Zen

Take a deep breath. Stress remains an ever-growing problem throughout the world and especially here in the United States. All of us can reduce stress by becoming more mindful through meditation and yoga. Every couple weeks have a yoga instructor come teach a class in the office or hold regular meditation sessions. Uplift the mood of employees, while promoting happiness and well-being by diffusing ZEN essential oils in your work space.

5. Start Walking (Meetings)

Walk and talk. It’s a concept older than time itself. A few reasons to turn your normal everyday meeting into a walking meeting:

  1. Introduce physical activity into your workday
  2. Get a boost of energy by moving
  3. Be inspired by what you see on your journey
  4. Increase collaboration by moving from one conversation to another
  5. Research suggests walking makes people more creative

Avoiding Last-Minute Order Panic Before Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, commonly referred to as Spring Festival since the 20th century, remains the most important social and economic holiday in China. The holiday was originally tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar. Time was spent honoring your household, deities and ancestors. Families also gathered together to enjoy great feasts and connect with one another. After the adoption of the Western calendar in 1912, people of China joined in celebrating January 1 as New Year’s Day. Today China continues to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year, but as Spring Festival, a shorter version of the original holiday. However, traditions have evolved over time and younger generations of Chinese use it as a chance to take a break from work as opposed to renewing family ties.

How does this impact you as a promotional products distributor?

China factories will be shutdown from 2/7-2/25 to celebrate Chinese New Year, causing production and order delays for your business.
