Humans giving one another gifts is one of the oldest if not, the oldest, running traditions that has been passed from culture to culture and down generation to generation for thousands of years. In fact, it goes back as far as man can remember. By nature people are social creatures that enjoy being in each other’s company and convey our feelings through the giving of gifts. When you give someone a gift it can be an expression of love, acknowledging a job well done or a simple thank you that shows gratitude for a friend. To better understand the origination of gift giving and why it’s still important today, we must travel back in time where this unique form of expression began.

Where did it begin?
Nobody is certain, but it is suspected that gift giving originated in primitive cavemen culture. Leaders of tribes or clans would recognize upstanding individuals who took part in the success of a great achievement by entrusting them with a gift. Back then this was seen as a status symbol. Natural yet unique objects were given such as rare stones, teeth from a triumphant kill or special wood and bark from a tree. Tools soon came into the picture and allowed for more elaborate gifts to be crafted like necklaces and other wearables.
In the Egyptian era, pharaohs received a majority of the gifts and built immense pyramids to store their riches for the afterlife.
Good luck tokens were used by the Roman’s to show allegiance and presents to carry favors. This later influenced all of Western civilization and “tokens” are still used today.
During the Medieval age gifts were given to the king to gain favors or to show dedication in times of war. Upon formal engagement to be married personal gifts would be given as dowries in the form of coins, precious metals and even herds of cows or sheep.

Why is it still important?
There’s an old saying that goes like this: “it is far better to give than to receive.” Every day gifts are given to partners, family members, co-workers and friends. Hosting an event that people will remember can be challenging and (if we’re all being honest) super overwhelming. You’re probably thinking:
“How will I promote it?”
“Will anyone actually come?”
“Chicken, fish or vegetarian?”
“What if my budget isn’t big enough?”
Press pause. Before you answer any of the above questions, let’s go back to the beginning and start with step one.
Here are 4 event planning tips:
Knowing your audience is key to throwing an event that people will remember. In order to create interest for both attendees and sponsors you’ll need to spend time on developing killer content that creates a buzz around your event. Before you begin producing said content and event assets you will want to figure out exactly who it is you are trying to invite.
After the content is built and you have determined your audience, it’s time to spread the word. Technically, there is no right or wrong way to go about enticing people into coming to your event. Start by finding them first.
Promoting your event could look like:
- Strategically placed posters throughout the community
- Utilizing major influencers to share the message
- Targeted online ads
- Social media posts / Facebook event
- Press release
- Having sponsors leverage their audience
- Industry Associations
Lastly, remember to compile relevant data on attendees during the registration process. Having that information will not only help you grow and understand your audience, but better connect with them in future promotions.
Location, location, location. Did we mention location?
On a more serious note, location will make or break your event. It’s really important and sets the tone from arrival to departure.
Some things to consider before making a decision:
- Atmosphere you want to create
- Amenities that will be required (rooms for breakout sessions, power, restrooms, food etc.) – List all of these out
- Room and board – Most hotels will negotiate for large groups
- Space for sponsor booths or tables
It’s easy to forget that speakers get as much from your event as you are getting from them. Meet Ben Altenes. Veteran, photographer and ultra runner.
He’s the kind of guy who refers to a 20 mile trail run as “afternoon fun”. Ben is also a US Army Veteran and began running as a positive way of dealing with PTSD. Being active and outdoors can be extremely therapeutic. After Ben’s military service the camera became his outlet, that tool to bring along with him just like he brought along a weapon during combat. Not all sunscreen is created equal.
Therefore, it can be overwhelming to know which products you can trust and those you should avoid. Don’t worry! We’ve done the research for you. Keep reading for the attributes you should look for in high quality sunscreen.
SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a measure of sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Well, now you might be thinking to yourself, “What’s the difference between SPF 15 and SPF 50 sunscreen?”. Let’s break it down into the percent each SPF filters out:
SPF 15 – 93% of all incoming UVB rays
SPF 30 – 97% of all incoming UVB rays
SPF 50 – 98% of all incoming UVB rays
Difference in protection is minimal, but if you have sensitive skin, or your family has a history of skin cancer, an extra 5% can make a large impact. No matter if you are using SPF 30 or 50, no sunscreen can black all UV rays.
Broad spectrum is a term that is often synonymous with sunscreen, but what does it actually mean?
Two types of UV light can damage your skin – UVA and UVB. Broad spectrum sunscreen products protect you from both. The first can prematurely age your skin while the latter can cause your skin to burn (something we are all too familiar with). Personal care products being sold and labeled as broad spectrum sunscreen must be tested and meet the updated FDA standards on a regular basis. Make sure your sunscreen of choice is up to par.
Oxybenzone aka benzophenone-3, BP-3, and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone. Wow that’s a mouthful. So, why is it bad?
Environmental Working Group says the chemical oxybenzone is being added to nearly 65% of non-mineral sunscreens as documented in their 2017 sunscreen database. Oxybenzone is a chemical found in some flowering plants. However, it is now being commercially produced from benzoyl chloride with 3-hydroxyanisole. Research suggests that chemical sunscreens are absorbed through the skin and make their way into the bloodstream. EWG, among other toxicology experts, believe it is linked to hormone disruption and potentially to cell damage that may lead to skin cancer. Double check the label to ensure your sunscreen doesn’t have this toxic ingredient. Learn more at ewg.org
Hawaii’s state legislature recently passed a bill that bans chemical sunscreens that not only cause harm to your body, but reportedly contribute to coral reef bleaching. Senate Bill 2571 prohibits the sale and distribution of any sunscreen that contains oxybenzone or octinoxate. According to the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology “chemicals in sunscreen kill coral and result in DNA damage in larval and adult stage coral. The impact on DNA limits coral’s ability to grow and develop healthily.”
Branded sunscreen sales will be impacted by this new regulation. How much? That is yet to be determined. History of the Flu
Have you heard about the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918? According to History.com, it was the deadliest in history, infecting an estimated 500 million people worldwide. At the time, that accumulated for about one-third of the planet’s population. It killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims, including 675,000 Americans. The never-before-seen 1918 flu strain was detected first in Europe, United Starts and parts of Asia before making its way around the world. What is the flu and how do you get it?
WebMD defines it as: Influenza, commonly known as the “flu”, is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses (Bad Nasties). The virus is spread through the air when a person coughs, sneezes, talks etc. You can also become infected by touching something with the virus already on it and then making contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. “Flu season” tends to run from late fall into early spring here in the United States.

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, commonly referred to as Spring Festival since the 20th century, remains the most important social and economic holiday in China. The holiday was originally tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar. Time was spent honoring your household, deities and ancestors.
